FTC Commitee Thank Yous!

I want to thank each and every one of you who took time out of your life to come out to FTC!

I'm sure you all wanted to know who planned this wonderful FTC because I could not have done this without all THEIR help.

Even though I had written all my thankyous to each of you in the program, I still can't thank you enough for everything that you have done. All the success it based on what you did to help out!

Iman: thank you for making that wonderful and beautiful program. I think that everyone loved it!

Karen: thanks for staying up Friday night to the wee hours to make sure that everyone was checked in. Also, thanks for making sure that everyone was checked in and what not. This weekend must have been tiring for you, but I hope you had an amazing time!

Keiko: thank you for all the help you did for the dining halls. I think that the constellations and making people sit together really helped with district unity!

Lee: thank you so much for finding all those AMAZING gifts for the workshop presenters, souvenirs, and workshop raffle!

Tammy Tieu and Lena: Thank you for all the hard work you put into the decorations. They looked super amazing and I'm so glad that all was done! They looked SUPER cool, especially the background!

Tammy Tran and Linda: thank you for putting so much time and effort into these workshops, I really think that this year, the workshops were very effective and useful to everyone participating.

Linh: Thank you for making all of the cell phone charms, they were all so amazingly cute and also packaging all 500 cookies! You are amazing!

Shaun: Thank you for being amazing at your job. Although we couldnt get the projector and what not to work during the Friday session, thanks for being able to think on your feet and what not. In addition, although we were not able to put the puzzle up, thank you for being able to make that for me!

Ryan: thank you for making two amazing slideshows. They were awesome and I think that everyone really enjoyed them as well!

Tiffany: Thank you for choosing some awesome skits. I really think that everyone had enjoyed every skit. Even with all the rules and regulations, I think that everyone's skits were super awesome!

Victor: thank you! You were awesome. The SAAs were well prepared to deal with situations and I'm so glad that you were a trooper! Sick and still a great SAA chair.

Vigil: Thank you for planning some awesome alternative to the dance. Also thank you for taking care of the DJ as well. AWESOME!

last and DEFINITELY but not least, my wonderful advisors, the Carpenters: You were amazing. The two of you, thank you so much. I relied on the two the you when I knew I could the most. Especially when I was stressed out the max, you two made things easier. <3

District Summer Service Social

Congratulations CNH Circle K! We packaged over 200 activity bags to be donated to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital. Over 45 stunning greeting cards were made for children sponsored by the Hugs and Hopes Organization. It was a busy but exciting week with meeting Kiwanians, an Eat for Service, a zoo exploration, and lots of fun time. About 70 Circle K members from Capital to Paradise Divisions came throughout the weekend to perform hundreds of hours of service, make new friends, and of course, have fun!

DSSS started out bright and early on Thursday morning at the Town and Country Convention Center in San Diego, CA. Everyone helped set up for our three booths: Circle K info booth, Kiwanis Supplies, and our Service Booth. As the Kiwanians came rolling in for their District Convention, so did our Comfort Dolls. Made out of wooden clothespins, white fabric, sharpies, pipecleaners, and ribbon, these dolls were made with CKI love and creativity. This was just part one of the activity bag. In the evening, an Eat for Service Fundraiser was held at Souplantation for our newest District Fundraising Initiative: Starlight Starbright.

O-live Circle K!

Hundreds of stickers, paper, and markers kicked off Friday which was even more fantastic with cute knock knock jokes and terrific freehand drawings. We made greeting cards galore. These cards were super creative and went to chronically ill children of the Hugs and Hope Organization. Lots of origami hearts were also I know they will greatly appreciate these cards! After a fun-filled day, we headed to the San Diego Zoo to spend some time with the flamingos… The Zoo was lots of fun and we got to see lots of cool animals. :)

As Saturday rolled around, the service project came to life. We packaged crayons, put together mini activity books, and put it all together as our project expanded from one table to four tables. The end result: a beautiful activity package made with CKI love. Check out the pictures below for a look at our amazing event. :)

Thank you to everyone who attended and to everyone who made this event spectacular. Don’t worry if you missed out this time because the Service Team will be hosting several more projects throughout the year at FTC, DLSSP, and DCON!

A moment of silence for Nancy Vang, KIWIN's member

Dear Friends:

I received an email today about Nancy Vang, a KIWIN's member that has passed away from complications with a spider bite she received last August.

"Something terrible and life changing happened to 17-year-old Nancy Vang as she slept one August night last year. When the promising Merced High School student and civic volunteer woke up in the morning, she discovered a severe rash on her thigh, just above the knee. And at some point, as she prepared to go to school, she noticed a spider crawling around her bed. She went to school that morning, friends and family say, but she soon felt sick to her stomach. When she returned home, things got worse and family members rushed her to a hospital in Merced where doctors and nurses struggled to figure out exactly what was wrong.

Vang was listed in serious condition and sent to Children's Hospital in Madera where doctors determined she came into contact with some kind of flesh eating bacteria. Family members believe she may have been bitten by a venomous brown recluse spider or something similar. But medical experts to this day have not confirmed that. In Madera, they performed several operations to remove muscle from her right thigh. But the growing infection became worse and a large portion of her intestines had to be removed. As she recovered from that operation, her kidneys failed. Then her heart stopped for a brief, scary moment. With her health declining by the day, Vang was transported to the Intensive Care Unit at UC Davis Medical Center. Her condition there was somewhat stabilized, but she had insufficient blood flow to the lower part of her right leg. Doctors said she could not recover unless the leg was removed just below the knee.

Today Vang is heavily medicated with several tubes extending from her bladder and one down her throat which prevents her from speaking. Her recovery has been slowed by infections that have damaged her kidneys. "It's very serious for everybody involved," said Larry Mercando of the Kiwanis Club of Merced — the group that has been spearheading a campaign to help the Vang family.

Several of Vang's seven siblings are active members of KIWIN'S, the youth wing of the Kiwanis. Her older sister Jenny Vang won a $24,000 Key Club Scholarship at the 2007 KIWIN'S convention and now attends college. Nancy Vang was following in her sister's footsteps before she became ill. She was co-secretary and perhaps the most active member of the organization, Mercando said.

"Word has been sent to all the Kiwanis Club houses in California, Nevada and Hawaii," Mercando said. "We are all trying to raise money for her. We are looking at ways to get her a leg prosthesis she can use when she gets better." Over the weekend, scores of KIWIN'S volunteers helped organize a book sale in Nancy Vang's honor at the main plaza of the Merced Mall.

"She was my first friend in school when I moved here," said book sale organizer Lily Chou. "She always looks on the bright side and believed that the impossible is the possible. She would say, "Even two parallel lines may one day meet." Nancy Vang is part of a Hmong family that was forced out of Laos and into a Thailand refugee camp during the Vietnam War. They were able to immigrate to the United states in 1987.

Her father, Charles Vang, worked as a part-time tutor and had a small business selling goods at local flea markets. He stopped most of his work so that he could be close to his daughter at UC Davis Medical Center. He has been residing at the Kiwanis Family House in Sacramento with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Merced. His wife works midnight shifts at a local distribution center."

Hello Guardians!

I just wanted to thank you again from the bottom of my LOUD LOUD heart for this entire year and for attending our End of Year Luau. Even though we got rained out of the park location everything worked great on the UC Berkeley campus. Thanks to our guests from Southern California Circle K's and Capital Division! Thanks to Team Guardian--Matt & Mai Yer for helping me plan an AMAZING banquet! Thanks to Phuoc who picked up the food and recommended Hawaiian Drive-Inn from Alameda b/c the food was DELICIOUS! There'll be more reflections I'll post in my blog this week as well as on the Sunblog on http://cnhcirclek.org.

I FIGURED OUT HOW TO POST!

YAY, I finally figured out how to post on this thing -____-.

I'm currently sitting in the Phoenix airport waiting for my flight back to San Diego. Yup! It's only been a week and I'm already traveling! It's kind of strange because sometimes it still surprises me that I'm actually Governor of the best district EVER and at the same time it feels like it's been FOREVER since I've been in this position.

I'm on my way back to California after spending the weekend in Indianapolis for the Governors and Administrators Training Conference (otherwise known as GATC). I had a great time bonding with Camille and discussing my goals and ideas for the year. I'm SUPER excited and nervous about the upcoming year but I know it'll be an amazing experience.

I'm still really bummed I didn't get to go to the Key Club District Convention this year because I've never been to one and this was the year I was planning on going. :( I haven't heard who I'm going to be working with this year but I'm really excited to meet my Key Club counterpart!

I just wanted to give a shout-out to Kevin Young because he is AWESOME and did a great job with supply sales at the Key Club Convention! Also, THANKS to Chris Plasterer for representing Circle K at the convention. I saw the text he sent to Camille and apparently the room for the Circle K workshop was packed and people were sitting on the floor. And lastly, to Richard Kong for taking care of the Circle K booth and getting sign-ups for graduating Key Clubbers (and for taking care of my poster, it's my baby, hehe).

I still have another hour before my flight to San Diego and I CAN'T WAIT to come home. I was really excited about going to Indianapolis but I didn't anticipate that I would miss California sooo much!! I miss my Cal-Nev-Ha family! :(

p.s. You guys don't know how much you seriously rock.

I'm so proud of you guys because I actually know most of you and I know you're already a very strong board with all of your different personalities.

Good luck to my Dfamily Honyin and Richard--ya'll are going to do amazing in your new positions. Treat the new kids as well as you've treated us!

Capi-Gate's gonna ROCK w/ Alisa & Macky as your LTG's--if you don't know why now you'll definitely find out why at STC-North! I believe they literally emit fireworks together!

THANK YOU DISTRICT BOARD! This is for you…

Chris – Thank you for motivating me to always believe and to endure even since I was president. I’m doing my best to do the same for you Gov. There have been a lot of times when you’ve literally picked my off of the floor by just saying some words of encouragement.

Alex – You always know me too well and it bugs the hell out of me. I’m glad I’ve always had you these past 4 years. We rose together: chairs → e-board → district board. Thanks for keeping me sane and allowing me to yell at you when I’m yelling about other people. More to say at banquet…

Alice – OMG! LOUD GIRLS! Forever. I love talking to you, no matter how personal, how heated, how loud, how inappropriate it gets. I always had such a great time with you every time you visited Nor-Cal! Sushi, Pon & Zi, lolcats, blizzardcon conversations… I’ll always remember that one night…

Amy - You’re always the best. Always supportive and there when I need you. A lot of people don’t know you on D-board the way Alex and I do. Thank you for always being hilarious and there’ll be a lot of tears at Spring Banquet. Count on it, I got a song to sing to you…

Christine – I’m going to show up to your apartment and keep you up all night talking about stuff hahahaha. I’m still amazed at how we have crazy Vegas connections. I’ll be in Reno on the 16th for the graduation so I have to see you! I’m so proud to have shared Northern Cal-Nev with you.

Horacio – Awww Horacio! Where have you been! I’m sure you’re super busy… All good, just know you’re always welcomed to stay at my apartment whenever you need hahahaha!

Danny – I’m so glad you came to visit for DLSSP-North! So many good bonding times and singing! Sorry for taking you to lecture only to see a bunny slaughtered (I don’t think either of us will forget :[ ). I’m so proud of everything you accomplished that weekend and this entire year. Great job.

Andi – I’m amazed at all the things you do and how you have so much passion for everything, especially the Kiwanis Family. Thank you for opening up your crazy house to us. You have the coolest Vietnamese understanding dog ever and we’ll always be the really angry, loud d-board girls.

Maria – I like how you always ask everyone for advice to improve your leadership style. Thank you for being so supportive. I swear, I feel like I don’t do much at times but you’re always like, “You’re so wise…” HAHAHAHA.

Tiffany – Hahaha, I like hearing you freak out online about all the stuff you need to do b/c you know you always do that. I’m glad you didn’t resign. Foothill doesn’t need that anymore. You’ve set the first example they’ve had in a long time for a strong leader and LTG.

E.T. – We will always be angry, loud, and competitive. Why the hell have we always held the same Circle K offices?!?! Thanks for always pumping us up to make fools of ourselves in front of Cal-Nev-Ha. Every board needs someone like you.

Ruben – I appreciate your unending light-heartedness and spirit. You’re always down to do anything and thanks for all of your divisional and district support.

Long – You’re such an open guy, which allows the rest of us to open up to you. I enjoy our short, random 4AM AIM chats and dang you for encouraging me to stay up all night because I did that one night. Thanks for the support, you’re so much fun, and I love cheering with you! Berkvine?!

Honyin – YOU MAKE ME LAUGH. Seriously, all the time. I swear some of the things that come out of your mouth are hilarious. Thanks for touring Golden Gate with me in September and then coming back to have long conversations in my living room when I should’ve studied for finals.

Monica – Many props for taking on the great challenge of FTC. I had such an amazing last FTC. The perfect way to end these 4 years, thanks! Good luck on Mission College! Yay for Golden Gate growth!

Gail – You developed me into the leader and person I am today. You helped me become expressive, caring, and showed me that it’s okay to wear your heart on your sleeve—smile, cry. Just let it all out. Thank you President Mom and LTG Mom. I wouldn’t have followed anyone but you.

Francis –You’re like my little brother! You’re so great! Maybe it was destiny that we have a future beyond our awkward high school meetings. I’m so glad we ever served on the same board together. I love your creativity and energy. You’re going to be an amazing president!

Richard – You’re so awkward but not the bad kind of awkward. You’re as enjoyable as the first day I met you sitting in that hall at ICON in Portland. I enjoy talking to you no matter how random. Thanks for always bringing up the Who Rocks this house cheer hahaha. DCON will be glorious!

To my dearest Guardians of the Golden Gate Division,

This past Sunday marked my very last DCM as your Golden Gate Lieutenant Governor and it's crazy to think about how it was almost 1 year ago that I held my first one in April. Every year I can't believe how fast time passes and it's relieving and sad to think that wow, I don't have another Circle K office to fulfill next year. As of District Convention, I will be completely done with my, I guess you could call it a "Circle K Career." I'm very proud that I held all the offices I did in this organization and am surprised at how much I loved each one of them--UC Berkeley's Spirit & Social Chair 06-07, President 07-08, and now Golden Gate Lieutenant Governor 08-09. Each was a very different and worthwhile learning experience. I know that what each of these offices put me through developed me into the leader and person I am today. I remember being scared about taking on each position and when I look back on it I'm so glad I made the decision to put myself out there, take risks, to make mistakes, and learn from everything. It's amazing to think of all of the different opportunities and learning experiences a leadership role can give you. I've said it a million times before and I'll say it again, "If you ever have the chance to become a leader, take it. It will be difficult and stressful but the rewards at the end are unimaginable and well worth your efforts. Youâ€™ll become a better person as I believe I have from this experience."

Okay enough with my leadership reflection. You won't completely understand until you've put yourself in the same position, so do it! Thank you Golden Gate for an amazing year. I'm thankful to have worked with such wonderful presidents. Needless to say there's always going to be drama throughout the Circle K year but you all made it through. Thank you for helping me by offering project of the month ideas and hosting my DCM's. You guys did an amazing job of supporting each other and the rest of the district. I enjoyed the hours of conversations I had with you all and I'm proud of the relationships we've established on a professional and friendly level. I'll always remember visiting your club's general meetings, helping you at your board retreats, seeing your clubs reach new heights, and watching each of you develop as leaders yourselves.

I'm always so happy to see the Guardians at full force at divisional and district events cheering together. I think this year we've never had such a large, consistent amount of attendance to my Divisional Council Meetings (DCM's) and divisional projects. I mean we had 70 people at our last DCM and about 60 at our February project, now tell me about divisional unity. Actually, I'm surprised at how so many of you are willing to listen to my loud mouth talk and even yell at your for an hour every month. HAHAHAHA. We always roll deep at district events--usually rolling in with over 100 members easily. That makes for a lot of volume and lots of time spent making spirit supplies for me hahahaha. Remember all of the hilarious moments--competing to see who can get the most food donations, our favorite honorary Guardian Khin Win from UC Davis, Capi-Gate Dance Crew practices, planning spirit for FTC & DCON, and endless cheering.

I'm so proud of you kids. With 259 (20%) of Cal-Nev-Ha's 1241 members, together we performed 27,225.9 (32.2%) of this year's total 84,425.3 service hours, fundraised $15,208.94 (43.2%) of the total $35,236.34 raised for our district fundraising initiatives, and performed 364 (33.3%) of the district's 1092 interclubs. I marvel at how we accomplished everything in 1 year. Now let's rock out and celebrate this crazy year together at District Convention.

Congratulations on an explosive, successful 08-09 term and thank you for giving me the honor to serve as your 08-09 Lieutenant Governor. I love you Guardians!

On District Board... <3

This past weekend marked our last trip to Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga for our Winter District Board meeting. Oh god, I always have so much fun with these kids. It sucks that we're in this year long distance relationship. Well, I guess I'm a pro at those now eh? A year ago, I remember having reservations about joining District Board. From a club perspective it doesn't seem like the D-board has much of an impact on the members or the service, etc. I mean, who really has to listen to what the District says anyways? No one really. I know in the past being on club board we've had some issues, concerns, and annoyances with District Board which I'm sure that so many other clubs have experienced. Maybe some don't value what District Board does b/c honestly it is very difficult to see the kind of impact we try to make on Cal-Nev-Ha. People don't think that District Board does stuff or that people drift away from their clubs if they decide to take this leadership route.

Yes, these were my reservations running for Lieutenant Governor last year. What I was most afraid about was being alone on District Board. I was so used to having a board and a club with me everyday, all the time here in Berkeley. I love that, always being immersed in the club. I was scared that I might have to go on my own to be the Golden Gate LTG. I didn't want to travel by myself, be a lone person from Northern California/Berkeley. I felt so much better after Alex told me he wanted to run for District Secretary. Yeah, not so alone anymore. I'd have my Circle K partner in crime and husband that 07-08 year--hahahaha seemed like that at times--by my side.

Last District Convention, we ran for our respective positions and fortunately won. Here we were though, on the edge of an entirely new Circle K experience. I remember back in Key Club I never would have imagined myself on District Board let alone a Lieutenant Governor. We were elected amongst a small, and shy/not-so-shy group of people: Chris Plasterer, E.T. Mac, Danny Ha, Maria Turcios, Andrea Nguyen, Horacio Valera. We started off as a very small district board. The only people I really knew aside from Alex was E.T. b/c well we were Golden Gate Spirit & Social Chairs together (that's another story in itself), Chris, and Andi who I was cool with but didn't know very well.

Within a matter of months appointments were made and we became complete. A whole new crop of kids chosen to work together for the benefit of Cal-Nev-Ha. I knew a bunch of people from my own travels from around the district but I didn't really know them. That first complete meeting in July though--sparks. We seriously just seem to click and fit together. The chemistry we have together is crazy. Takes me back to the days when I became a chair under Gail's presidency. We were so young and ambitious and ready to prove ourselves. I love that feeling--it makes people strive to do their best. We have endless energy together and makes me SO EXCITED every meeting to hang out and see everyone.

Somehow we manage to keep our relationships strong and work together all year long. Even though we're separated by hundreds of miles I've found supports and anchors on this District Board. They're always an IM, text message, web cam, wall write/video/photo, away. I enjoy keeping each other awake online while we're writing papers early in the morning, catching up with people's lives, and those amazing D-Board bonding times. I don't think I've ever had so many late night chats in my living room with So-Cal-Nev people as this year hahaha. I love getting together and just yelling and laughing about anything. So many freaking jokes and incidents.

I never knew we'd be able to raise so many bars this year for Cal-Nev-Ha. So many ambitious plans and great ideas and a lot were successful and maybe some weren't. I see now all the hard work it takes to run a Circle K District and that the purpose of the District Board is to make sure that all of our clubs are unified and focused on community service whether it's the environment, healthy/safety, literacy. Think about it, only about 20 people somehow lead 2,000 people to make a difference in our communities. Wow. I hope I've had some sort of impact on the Golden Gate Division. I've looked at the numbers and we sure do make a difference. Maybe the impact seems really diffuse to you but you'll know if you ever join D-board.

It's really scary to think that we have less two months together and we won't reunite at our Favorite Best Western in Rancho Cucamonga again. Did so much together. All we have left together as a whole D-Board is Woodland Hills for District Convention and that will be most glorious. Richard Kong and his committee are definitely making sure of that.

Hmmm and the point of this blog? Well, I like expressing my love for things. I've made lifelong friends and come away with plethora of amazing memories from this experience. This has definitely been one of my most rewarding experiences in Circle K.That and District Board is a worthwhile experience if you make the most of it. Take advantage, impact your clubs, build leaders, make friends, support each other. I encourage any of you who are current leaders in your clubs and who are thinking about running/applying for D-Board that it's amazing and you're going to have sooo much fun! Especially since Camille is District Administrator, she's the best. So, DO IT, don't be scared of "going off on your own to be on District Board" you have your fellow D-Boardies to be your support even if they are hundreds of miles away. Become a leader. Great rewards will always follow if you work hard and help each other. All of your hard work will shine at District Convention.

Governor Tour - Weekend 2

Weekend number 2 in my Governor tour landed me in the heart of the OC- California.

A day before I was to land I had the chance to catch up with the Assistant Administrator for KIWIN’S, Paul Duplesis. Paul is an amazing and loyal friend. If you’ve never met the man, make it a habit to at our District Convention.

Paul is a guy whose life has had its ups and downs, but through it all he’s always had a ton of support. KIWIN’S members who are now CKI’ers definitely understand and appreciate everything this guy does. That being said, the guy is insanely funny as well. Not funny as in, he makes a ton of jokes. He’s more of the guy who tells people like me that I’m pushing the envelope a bit. The problem is, he can’t tell me to stop pushing the envelope because he’s laughing so damn hard. Ah Paul. Future DA.

I land in Ontario, and Paul picks me up and takes me to the Magic Kingdom Service Project/DCM. My flight was a bit late, so I didn’t even get a chance to help the kids make art supplies. It was good to see Lt. Governor Danny and our Awards Chair Long hanging out with the kids though. The only problem is, when you put the three of us, and a couple more people together … yeah, it leads to a ton of laughs.

After the service project, UCI President Sarah Bana led the clubs in a “reflection” of the service project. Pretty much, everyone gathers in a circle and reflects on the event. It is an amazing way to get people to understand and better yet, feel the importance of the presence in these events. I think it is definitely something I would pass along to other clubs looking for a way to motivate members into doing service.

The Magic Kingdom DCM was held in a Chipotle – classic. Though I don’t recommend it (and Danny knows, haha), it was actually a pretty quiet place to have the meeting luckily. I was given a plaque for riding the rose float, and we got to begin the fun game of naming people to future District Board positions – even if they didn’t know so! Please make it a habit to attend DCM’s, they really are fun!

From the DCM, I had to jump back in Paul’s car and head on over to Glendora for the Metro Crab Feed.

Let me tell you how awesome this concept is:

You host an event, in which members pay a set amount to eat as much crab as humanly possible. Most buffets in Las Vegas (Lost Wages) is about 25-30 bucks. You eat a ton of different things. Most buffets even charge more if they offer seafood. But if you, as a club, buy the crab in bulk from a wholesaler, reducing the costs considerably, you can charge less. $22 does the trick for me. And then you donate the money to a good cause, you give people a reason to want to eat all this crab. It’s a great fundraiser. I encourage all of you to have food fundraisers. I will attend them. Crab seems to be the weakness for me.

The feed itself was pretty awesome, filled with raffles and familiar faces. Peter Yu attended the event. So now you have Peter Yu, myself, Paul, Alan Morton (Past Go West Chair). You now have the most entertaining (at least we thought so) table in the room. I’m sure the UCLA club enjoyed our presence too (I hope!) Grace from UCLA seems to think I grew horizontally. Forget you foolio. =P

The next morning, after all you can eat crab, we decided it would be a great idea to have Korean BBQ in Garden Grove. At the event was Peter Yu, Lt. Governor Danny, Lt. Governor Andi, Awards Chair Long, Past District Officer Pei Pei Chu, Fullerton President Liz. It was all the guys on one table, the girls on the other. Even with all the men laughing over every joke we made (I can’t tell you the jokes made, they … you will have to message me), we were still going through plates of meat like crazy. It came to a point where we just kept eating the bacon pieces which is basically just fat fried. Way to go, Chris.

The amount we consumed in that hour was pretty nauseating, though if I didn’t have to leave for the airport, we would of stayed at least another 2 hours. We were pretty determined to deplete the Korean’s stock of meat.

The ride the airport with Andi was actually pretty fun. Few jokes, look at the time. Few more jokes, look at the time. I got the airport and ran through security. It was pretty hilarious, but I just made my flight on time. They didn’t serve drinks because the ride was bumpy, and they meant it. I couldn’t even read my magazine, which tells you it was pretty insane, that flight.

The weekend overall was awesome, I got to make two more divisional visits, and I only have a couple to go. I hope to be able to finish those up before my term in office is over. These last few months are really the fun ones the Governor gets to enjoy. Making visits, talking to clubs, getting a feel for where their future is headed. That’s really what our organization is about right now. We are making sure the future is in good hands. So do your part. Motivate members to step up and keep CNH #1.

Hawaii - Final Part

My final few days in Hawaii were quite amazing. On Sunday, I had the chance to meet Kiwanians from the island, representing two of the four clubs I believe they have on that one island alone. The UH Manoa Circle K Faculty Advisor was there as well, who was actually a former CKI’er! I told her about Fall Training Conference, and she immediately remembered Sonora from years past. She didn’t believe me when I said we had about 500 people at this year’s event. Haha.

The training of the UH Manoa and HPU Circle K’s went very well. We opened with the club’s self evaluation of the club, and came up with goals they though they could achieve by March. Lt. Governor E.T. and I both understood that they may not be at our District Convention, but we are very positive that they will reach their 20 member peak. In the end, we really hope they turn into the big brother of the HPU Club. How amazing would it be to bring in a new club from both Nevada AND Hawaii in one year?

Though making spam musubi was definitely the food highlight of the weekend, having the chance to meet and bond with the Hawaii CKI clubs was definitely my favorite overall event of the weekend. Here’s a club that is miles and miles away, yet still continues to do the same things we do. Now more than ever, they definitely would love to hear some of your encouragement. We are a family after all. Send your emails of encouragement and motivation to E.T., paradise@cnhcirclek.org. I’m sure he’ll send them off. To help the Hawaii clubs, we are also paying for two of their member’s DCON Registrations, as a token of our support as a District.

The rest of the weekend consisted of shopping at the Ala Moana mall. This place is definitely one of my top new reasons to live in Hawaii. They have every shop you ever wanted. I ended up getting some sauce on my shirt, so I went to the various stores and grabbed some gear. E.T. and I had a particularly fun experience in the Hollister Co. store that shall remain a secret!

After Ala Moana, we tried our hand at taking the bus, which was for the most part … interesting. We passed the time by reading up very cool pick up lines. Here are a few of my favorites:

Yeah … so after that, we had a chance to make bargains with some of the merchants along the street, and then headed with E.T. to an amazing party that was being held by a friend of his.

Listen to me when I say this: I want to live in this house. E.T. was like, “Psh, there are plenty like this,” which I believe, but I was just dumbstruck by it. It was an amazing house, but even more amazing was the food. They had potato salad with egg in it, prime steak, I mean prime; Pasta with shrimp, traditional Hawaiian music and just tons of tons of fun. Going immediately to the Honolulu International Airport from there was a bit of a bummer, but hey, what a way to end the weekend.

Hawaii was a lot of fun in the end, but more importantly we had a chance to get to know the entire situation with the clubs there. They are the same just like you and I. They encounter the same recruitment problems, and I think we made great progress in helping that. The Kiwanis clubs understand their need to help as well. I am confident that from this point on you won’t have to worry about anything going wrong in Hawaii. In fact, you might even see a second club.

Hawaiian Airlines is a pretty amazing airline. Many would be proud of me, I had:

The movie I was saw was really interesting too, Eagle Eye. If you haven't seen it, just check it out. In concept, its a pretty crazy way to look at how the Government checks up on us. :D

When I arrived in Honolulu, I was greeted by pretty much the whole UH Manoa CKI Club, and of course E.T. I got a lei, and immediately decided we need to eat. Haha. What can I say, I'm hungry!

We went to a members house, and had a chance to learn how to make spam musubi! Very cheap, very yummy. I'm literally going to make it hardcore when I get back to Vegas.

After food session, we ventured into Honolulu to find more restaurants and places to hang out. Really the time we spent here was a chance to unwind, find them the fun things to do in Hawaii. Why may you ask?

Because there is an weird assumption being made these days that if you are a community service organization, that's what you are. You just do service. All of us know that isn't true. So how do you show them all the full benefits we have to offer? I personally think you show them a good time. You take them to all these small socials in between meeting days. And you pretty much let them figure it out. They will think, "wow ... I could hang out and do this any other day, but I'm doing it with new people I met, and we even give back a little bit."

I think that's how you really bring non-kfam people into our awesome organization.

I'm getting ready now for day 2, where I will be working with the Kiwanis Clubs and both UH Manoa and Hawaii Pacific University. I really hope we can get them stoked to bring many from the island over to Woodland Hills.

2009 Governor Tour First Stop - Hawaii!

Happy New Year!

As my term begins to come to a close, I'm given some more time to actually get out to the divisions and speak up on the amazing accomplishments we've had throughout the year.

I am especially excited to make a Governor's visit to the Hawaii to work with the UHM Circle K Club.

Hawaii is a pretty cool place to make a Governor's visit. One of the first things I generally hear about the Kiwanis clubs there is that they ADORE their SLP's (Service Leadership Programs). The love and attention they put into their Key Clubs, KIWIN'S, and Circle K clubs is simply astounding. I'll have the opportunity to present a recruitment session for their club, and also work with Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), who is interested in being the 2nd CKI Club in Hawaii. To be a guest over in Hawaii is really an honor, and I am stoked to have a chance to work with their club.

This type of motivation and growth we are seeing this year is a sign of the effect community service is having on college students worldwide. A third club was added in Nevada, and almost every division in our District has a college interested in starting up a CKI club. Clubs are stepping up and keep traditions alive. Our Go West event was totally revolutionized, given a catchy new name, and gave members a reason to celebrate a year of service by decorating the many rose floats in the Pasadena area. The ability to step up, the ability to lead, and the ability to share our passions with others ... this will definitely be the message I send to you all during my final visits of my term.

Hawaii will definitely be an amazing trip. I leave Friday and return on Tuesday. If there is anything you would like me to forward to our Hawaiian friends while I'm there, feel free to shoot over a reply! Also, if there is something you would LIKE from Hawaii ... well all you have to do is ask!

(Note: As long as I don't get a request for 100 lei's =P )

After Hawaii, I'm already excited for the Metro Division Crab Feed. $22 for all you can eat crab, and proceeds going to UNICEF ... win-win situation.

You just ended your term as Capital District Governor and will be soon leaving us to start a new Circle K district in China :[ It's cool though, I'll be here waiting to welcome you back home. <3

Hello Guardians,
It's been a month and I'm long overdue with writing another blog. What better to do with my time while waiting to board my plane back home to So-Cal for Thanksgiving?! It was only a week ago that I was here at this airport coming back from an amazing weekend spent walking the streets of Washington D.C. This month has been insane. I only really saw 2 weekends in Berkeley and even then I had friends visiting so it's been pretty busy and left less room for Circle K. Blah, I feel like I haven't been to a home club project in so long and I sincerely miss that feeling of going to projects all the time and always being in the thick of the action. These semesters pass way too fast for all of us to stop and really appreciate them. Senior year is passing almost half over and crap it's on to graduation and being a full fledged adult?!

Aside from my freak outs about what I'm going to do once I graduate there is always Circle K ai yai yai. Just want to reflect on my last ever FTC and this past month for the Golden Gate. My last Fall Training Conference began early Friday morning around 2AM when Cal-Nev-Ha's District Board rolled into my apartment after a long drive from Southern California. It was great seeing everyone again. Especially since I'm from the North, I barely get a chance to hang out with these kids. Every time District Board reunites I'm reminded of the crazy chemistry that we have together. I swear we feed off each other's energy and can seriously act like a perpetual motion machine. Whether we're dancing endlessly during general sessions, cheering appropriately and inappropriately, or sharing our latest failures and successes in life I definitely know I ended up on an ideal D-Board. Hahaha. We got each other's backs from Hawaii to the Bay and in any time of need. I can't wait until I get back to So-Cal for Winter Break so I can take a tour of So-Cal with them.

Oh Fall Training Conference will forever be one of my favorite District Events and I definitely think that this year's FTC was the perfect ending to four awesome years. The Guardians repped the Golden Gate by wearing our super hero shields--so tizight---really showed our unity. I'm glad I decided to put the whole thing together the day before FTC... I'm such a slacker/over achiever--once I get an idea in my head I just have to do it and do it well or at least try to. We rolled into opening session 100 strong Guardians and of course we were one of the few divisions present since we were the hosting division. Ai yai yai. Nonetheless, we definitely showed Cal-Nev-Ha who the Guardians were! We took up about a quarter/25%/ 1/4 of the FTC attendance! BLAM! SHAZAM! IN YO FACE! hahahahaha :P Just kidding. Figures since we are the largest division and the closest to the event.

I'm so proud of all my guardians! I think we really blew away the district with endless Guardian cheers--people actually knew the cheers! GO US! Even better, we really cheered for our individual clubs!

Cheering is definitely a passion I have within Circle K I'll never forget all the spirit we brought to FTC. The giant almost formed mosh pits. I could've easily jumped on top of you guys and just hope that ya'll carried me all the way to the dining hall. Hmmmm. That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. How about at DCON? WHO'S IN?! I AM!!!!

Other cool moments that I'll never forget? Campfire skits, random/impromptu D-board skits, the *DESERT GATE BOOTY SLAP!!!* Best moment ever: the Super Guardian Dance Crew getting up on stage during Saturday's dance to perform the choreography to Big Bang - Lies. I could see everyone's face in the crowd--they were definitely surprised. I think we all went crazy over that performance. Great job Super Guardians! That was definitely one of my proudest moments as LTG--dance crew come to life! (tutorial videos can be found online! ON YOUTUBE) Now onto that music video... We really showed Cal-Nev-Ha what Golden Gate's made of: pure divisional unity and spirit.

There was never a quiet or dull moment for us at FTC. I'm so proud to be able to call myself the Golden Gate Lieutenant Governor and I'm glad we got to represent in front of all of Cal-Nev-Ha. Let's continue to pop, lock, and drop it all the way to District Convention (DCON) in March! *WE ARE PROUD OF YOU SAID WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!!*

My Kiwanis Convention - Part 2

Hi!

So long since I updated you all ... we are in the crazy part of our terms, with new members, our awesome fall events, and so much more! But a promise is a promise ...

Day 2

The coolest part, at least for me, about Kiwanis Convention is that we have a chance to take money from Kiwanians. Literally.

Our supply sales that we host give us an opportunity to sell Kiwanis merchandise. From truck hitches to ties and blazers, we receive 10% of all of the money made, usually resulting in about 1,000 bucks in funding for our events, and special events we wish to attend for you guys!

This year was a bit slower than usual. Blame that on location, not on us. But there was some bright moments from this.

We are in the middle of a fierce competition with the rest of Circle K International selling pins. Yes pins. The UNICEF Six Cents Initiative pins. They are on sale for $3, with all money going to the Six Cents Initiative. We started with 200 pins on Friday. By Saturday afternoon, there were all gone. ALL gone.

With that, we catapulted into the International lead. Not to worry, everyone. Your District Treasurer just received 100 more. Let's get those sold in record time as well!

Kiwanis Convention will definitely be a culture shock when you go to their banquets. Rather than having cheer competitions or things loud like that, you are going to see a jazz band play, and as an SLP member, Kiwanians letting you know about the new club they want to start up. It's not that bad, really. The jazz band wasn't half bad.

The other Governors and I kept busy trying to make the Kiwanians say slang words, such as, "fasho" and "lawl".

It was pretty fun.

Throughout the convention, Circle K members were volunteering at various service projects, and meeting Kiwanians. It's always good to see that Kiwanians are beginning to see the faces of Circle K'ers more and more. This is why we are seeing such a positive growth every year now in CKI.

At night, the other Governors and I had the opportunity to attend the Kiwanis Governor-Elect's installation dinner. He had a bounce house, a wheelchair racetrack, and a gladiator ring. I got to knock him out a couple of times, but unfortunately another bigger guy knocked me out a few minutes later.

It was still a ton of fun.

After a summer of revisions and corrections, the 2008-2009 District Awards applications are now on the website! I know that it's only September and everything seems so far away, but as you all know time flies by very quickly. I highly suggest that you take a look at the new forms this year, as many changes have been added to help increase the fairness of the awards and to encourage more schools to apply.

Due to the number of changes to the awards, I will also be posting a short list of changes to highlight certain points that I feel should be taken into consideration before applying. Please check back on the website for that list of changes, especially since they affect the upcoming FTC awards!

That's all for now! For those of you who just started class, good luck with your new year, and for those of you already in school, keep up the good work! Tomorrow Fund Recipients 2008

Since 2006, Circle K International has given grants from $200-$2000 to clubs and districts who apply and plan to use the money to execute service projects that help their community.

If you didn't know, the Tomorrow Fund used to be one of our District Fundraising Initiatives and for years, the Ca-Nev-Ha District has donated thousands upon thousands of dollars to this fund. Its awesome knowing that the money is going to a good cause and back to the clubs who have raised so much for it in the past.

The following clubs will receive grants that will allow them to implement their service projects of awesomness:

Kiwanis Family Day "Back to School, Back to Service"

Celebrate the 1st Saturday of every month with your Kiwanis Family! The 1st Saturday of September marks the 1st Kiwanis Family Day of the 2008-2009 year. As we find ourselves back in school this month, it makes perfect sense to have our theme "Back to School, Back to Service" with a focus on academics.

The 1st Saturday is the suggested date for our Kiwanis Family days, but if this date doesn't work try and have the event as close to the date as possible and be sure to label it on the MRF that it was a Kiwanis Family Day.

My Kiwanis Convention - Part 1

To make my Kiwanis Convention experience available to all of you, I decided to record things on my Blackberry as I went through the weekend. I thought that this way, my blog can actually serve as a funny timeline of everything a Governor does throughout the weekend. Turns out ... it's a lot funnier and wackier than I thought ...

Thursday

5:30pm - 8:00pm

I was running late from work (again!) and had not packed yet for the trip to Anaheim. I still actually had clothes from my suitcase from Denver and the International Convention. I grabbed what I could from the dry cleaning section of my closet and ran to my roommates car to zoom out to the airport. I hope I make it on time.

7:50pm

I have just ran the equivilant to about 5 miles, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get there on time for the flight.

7:56pm

My flight has been delayed. What a waste of energy. Food sounds great right now.

8:06pm

I will never pay $7.23 for a hot dog ever again.

8:20pm

I get on our flight and realize that the only available seats are in the very back. I make the long walk to the last row, and actually found a seat that had a pillow already in it. I rested my head and the flight attendant actually gave me a blanket. I have a new best friend.

9:15pm

I land in Ontario (California!), and give a call to E.T. to pick me up from the terminal. I began asking about how our District Summer Service Social had been going so far, and if there were any problems as of today. None at this point. I love my board for taking care of business while I'm trying to get there on time. I start talking about how everyone should be in dress code tomorrow, and I start to visually imagine what I have in my suitcase to make sure I have everything I need. Then I realized ...

... I didn't bring any underwear.

9:20pm

We begin our drive to a local Target. When we get there, we have about 15 minutes to grab underwear and run. We get to the cashier, and this guy ushers us to the side and asks if we have a Target card. We didn't and he asked if he wanted one. Still shaking our heads, he begins telling us that there is a competition between all the cashiers and the winner gets a DVD (wow ... competitive), and says he'll make up our information, he just needed a name. So after careful consideration, Honyin and E.T. told me a great name would be ...

.... well I can't actually type it out here, but if you ask me ... I'll make sure to tell you.

With comfy underwear, we check into the Anaheim Marriott. After getting into our room (911 ... even the hotel receptionist said it was weird), we watch olympics and passed out before USA captured the individual gymnastics gold.

Un-knocked out. The alarm clocks makes this really annoying noise.

7:00am

I get to attend the first breakfast of the Kiwanis Convention, the Foundation Honors breakfast. Pretty much, the California-Nevada-Hawaii Kiwanis Foundation gives a special breakfast to anyone who has ever received recognition from the Foundation. For Circle K'ers, one of the highest honors you can receive is a William A. Dunlap Fellowship award. We give out about four a year at our District Convention for those individuals we believe go above and beyond. You receive a medallian, other cool stuff, and have 1,000 dollars donated in your name to one of the Foundation's causes.

After history lesson, let me just say the eggs sucked, the bacon was delicious, and I weighed 3 pounds more when I left because I at the equivalant of two pigs I'm sure because of the bacon.

When you are Governor though, its pretty cool at this events. Everyone wants to shake your hand, and tell you their life story, and how somehow after 15 minutes of their talking, the feel they need to know a little bit about ... well Circle K! I love bragging about all of you and how we consistently shatter our goals both statistically and in terms of just having fun. That's probably the best part of any event for me.

8:15am

I make my rounds to the Supply Sales table. Part of what Circle K does at the Kiwanis Convention is make sure we sell everything related to Kiwanis. In return, we get a big percentage of the profit to help fund things like FALL TRAINING CONFERENCE and DISTRICT CONVENTION. We also have a booth set up so that we can communicate to Kiwanians about our great programs and services that we honor.

Throughout this, Bubba and his Service Committee were attending various service projects and helping with our Supply Sales as well. I had may 30 minutes though to really assist with anything before it was off to more hand shaking and sub-par food.

8:45am

I have a Kiwanian approach me when I am walking out of one of the exhibit halls. He asks me if the Kiwanis people messed up my name. Apparently, he thought that Plaster-er is a mispel.

To my Lt. Governors ... I told that Kiwanian, "Actually, you are right! It should actually be Plaster-er-er." He didn't get it, but my Lt. Governors will, and thats probably all that matters.

8:56am

I glance at a Kiwanian walking by with what I thought was an Ipod in his hand. He was in my division, so I said, "Way to embrace technolgy, Ted."

He replied, "That's not an Ipod, thats my hearing aid."

*sigh*

DSI 2008-2009: UNLEASH! Opportunties

On behalf of the District Service Team, I would like to announce that this year’s District Service Initiative will focus on Uncovering New Literacy, Environment, Safety and Health opportunities; hence, UNLEASH! :D

We believe the ability of each club and division to pursue more than one specific area of focus is key to a better understanding and appreciation of why we perform service. An endless amount of service opportunities are out there, and it is our responsibility as a district to bring those awesome projects to light. We want projects that benefit people of all ages and walks of life, from tutoring at a local Boys and Girls Club, to organizing a community-wide restoration of a local park or beach, to making bird feeders with seniors at a local convalescent home. Everywhere you look opportunities are available, and that is exactly what we want to promote--diversity in opportunities.

Speaking of opportunities, because there are three specific areas of focus for the DSI, the District Board has chosen to put each area on a rotating schedule which you can find below.

Literacy: August – October

Environment: November – December

Safety and Health: January - February

Remember, August – October is focused on literacy so get out there and help tutor kids at a local elementary (when they are back in school), play scrabble with the elderly at a convalescent home, or create a reading program at a local boys and girls club. The possibilities are endless!

We really hope you have a lot of fun this year trying out new projects. Don’t forget to share your ideas, because sharing is caring!

Your Circle K Year Can Feel Like ...

Climbing a mountain sometimes.

I can recall my freshman year in college (2005 ... wow, I've been around), and walking into my first ever Circle K meeting. It was held in a conference room, and with 12 seats available, 3 were empty, and the other seats were filled with very different people. I sat down on the farthest corner to hear about what was so exciting about this organization that could keep me around.

At first, nothing really caught my attention, until the Lieutenant Governor at the time discussed a Key Club Regional Training Conference, something I had attended every year back in high school. I immedietly jumped at the opportunity. After raising my hand and asking if I could head it up, I was told I was too new, and that I had no idea what the Kiwanis Family stood for in relation to Circle K and Key Club.

I was determined to prove him wrong. I attended other events, I helped try to do every possible to make him see what I could do. In the end, did it work? No clue, because I was having too much fun being a part of this amazing Circle K Club. Now, I was determined to help as many as I could, and to have as much fun as possible. I saw things that could improve in the club, as well as new ideas that could potentially help our club grow. I instantly looked into becoming an officer.

The next year I became Vice President, and told myself that in order to make the club successful, I needed to tell myself that I'm in this organization to help others be better, and not just myself. That I will become a better person through the experiences I share, and not just through my personal successes.

I wish I could tell you there is an easy way to do this, but there just isn't. I just did what I thought was the best for my club. When an email came out, and it needed some information, I jumped at it. If I I had a question, I would ask my President, or my Lieutenant Governor. I immersed myself in District activities to try to meet and greet club members who were part of amazing clubs throughout the rest of the CNH District.

I never let anyone tell me it can't be done. :)

Yeah, sometimes your Circle K year feels like a rollercoaster ride, but even so, you know deep down you'll continue to push through simply because of the impact you know you are going to make on your community, as well as your peers.

I stand here today as the CNH Governor sure, but I sure as heck didn't do it alone. And even this year, my Circle K year feels like getting my wisdom teeth pulled sometimes.

But I'm going to tough it through, because I want to see you do the very same and see how your club have yet another tremendous year.

It can feel like climbing mountains sometimes, but somebody has got to step up and do it. And if I could put all my money on a group of people to do it, it would be all of you.

DCON Slide Show Pictures

Richard, your Convention Chair here and I have an announcement about our Convention Slide Show. I know you might think it's too early for convention work, but it's important that you guys start sending in the pictures you want us to put in the slide show! So here is how you should send us pictures:

Send an email to dconshow@gmail.com with the following subject line: "School Name-Month-Year". Here is an example of how it should be formated:

UCI - July - 2008

In your email, attach a zip file of a maximum of 25 pictures from the events of that month. In addition, in the body, write the following: 1) a list of events from the pictures in the zip file and 2) the category of events (i.e. service, social, etc).

So start sending in pictures after each month so we can start making an awesome slide show for the convention!

My name is Bubba and I am the 2008-2009 District Service Chair for the California Nevada Hawaii District of Circle K International. President's Retreat

Hello Cal-Nev-Ha!

Last weekend 40 of your presidents, representatives and district board members went to Santa Barbara to go camping for presidents retreat.

We had an amazing time bonding with each other through ice breaker activities, barbecuing, and just being silly of course, CKI style.

Some of the highlights at President's retreat:

--The infamous "Death Hike"

--Chris almost eating a fly while talking

--Camille coming out to go camping with us

--We learned that Alex Chu has an evil twin occasionally known as E.T. Mac.

--Ripping Honyin's tent

--Everyone getting to know each other and making friendships that will last through the year.

It was an awesome experience getting to know everyone on a personal level and hopefully when you're president next year, you'll get to have the same experience. ;-)

Hey All!

Do you love to stand in the middle of a crowd and perform one one of your club cheers? Maybe wish that other clubs had the same opportunity? Well here is your chance, with the new position of CNH Cheermaster!

What exactly does a CNH Cheermaster do? Well here are some of the responsibilities:

Attain and account for one (1) cheer from each club and create a document for reference.
As requested, facilitate and manage spirit competitions during District Events, as advised by the District Governor.
Remain in constant communication by reporting activities to the District Governor in a timely manner.
Advise and assist clubs from all over the California-Nevada-Hawaii District in establishing cheers and unity within their respective clubs.
Representing the District Board in good taste, and following all guidelines as outlined in the District Bylaws.
Help create and establish new cheers on the District level.
Be willing to help with tasks that are not directly related to the Cheermaster position.

Dear Member,

What's in a name?

To Circle K International, it's simply:

"Live to serve. Love to serve."

There are many organizations out there that serve the community, but none can ever promote the three tenets that not only make a difference to our community, but also make a difference in our personal development as college students.

Think about it. We serve our communities, local churches, and so many other organizations. We do it selflessly, because we know that its not about what we do personally. It's not like we need another line on our resume to tell ourselves we are making a positive difference. But personally, we know that in the future, we will always have the incentive to help some woman load her groceries in her car, an urge to slap the person littering their bottle on the sidewalk.

With leadership, though we aspire (some of us) to take on additional responsibilities in this organization, there are more important lessons and concepts we learn from these opportunities. Imagine your ability to function in the real world, as an employee in the workplace. To be able to make decisions on your own, not requiring a lot of help and "hand-holding", and taking personal initiative to complete your objectives you have set out to do. These are all things you can you learn and adopt as leaders in this organization. The reward can be much more than a plaque or pat on the back. These opportunities are truly life-long tools.

And with fellowship ... this is probably the only organization that can cost us an arm and a leg at times and still put a smile on our faces. The networking, the friendships you attain will truly live on throughout the rest of your life. Other organizations have their annual convention internationally, and its fun to meet the rest of them. But Cal-Nev-Ha, this year we are planning to hold 7 District Events. That is seven opportunities to meet with the rest of your Circle K friends, and serve and be leaders, role models, and in some cases, somebody's hero.

So the next time someone asks you, "Isn't Circle K that Gas Station?" I want you to sit them down, and look at them long and hard for what they just said. DON'T HIT THEM, I know its an impulse. Just take a deep breath, and look them right in the eye, and say:

"It's more than just a name, that much, I can tell ya." And let the 2 hour discussion of your love and dedication to our organization begin.

Hey everyone!!!

Did you know that from March to May, Cal-Nev-Ha has done over approximately 22,000 service hours? In just 3 months, we've helped the homeless, mentored children, cleaned up the environment, worked with our communities and campuses, and so much more! That's AMAZING! Keep it up :) Just because it's summer doesn't mean Cal-Nev-Ha Circle K takes a vacation- we can just go to the beach more and play!

Graduating Seniors

Hello graduating Circle K seniors,

My name is Peter Yu formerly of UC Irvine Circle K and currently a California Young Professionals Kiwanian. I want to tell you guys about CAYP Kiwanis and personal reasons of how this organization helped me. We are a state wide Kiwanis club that was formed by past Circle K'ers and alumni that wished to join a Kiwanis club but are not able to join traditional clubs which tend to meet for several hours during the day. Our club meets every other Sunday via phone conferences which makes it very flexible for young people like ourselves to attend whether we're at home or out at dinner. We also have various in person Happy Hour meetings usually on weekdays after work. The most important thing to convey is that membership is FREE for any graduating Circle K member and all you have to do is send the application form attached and email it back to me.

Personally, after Circle K I still had a large number of my close friends in the organization, but it was weird being the old guy who showed up to events with no real affiliation to club. Being a CAYP Kiwanian allowed me to attend events as a Kiwanis Family member without having that awkward sense of, "what's that guy still doing here?" I know being in CAYP has helped me find a balance between my work and community service adn transition into the "real world".

Club Awards @ ICON

I've been getting a lot of concerned emails about the due dates, and how it made completely no sense and was unfair. So I spoke to the Circle K International Specialist.

I understand just as much as you do about the short notice, I was surprised as well. And also, having June 15th be on a Sunday too did not help. So I gave her a call.

She has informed me that there is a typo in the awards. The due date is not June 15th. It is July 15th OR on-site. If you do not turn in your awards by July 15th, they will be due on-site. I have asked the CKI Specialist to change the awards packet as necessary. There will be no penalty for turning in awards on-site.

I really do apologize for the go-around with this, I will stay up tonight if there are any changes, and inform you as needed.

To summarize:

Club awards due ON SITE or JULY 15th
Ignore the due date on the club awards packet online

Golden Gate Interclubbing!

Holler! So the Golden Gate has been up to some crazy service and interclubs since school ended for me! Thanks to the help and motivation from my buddies Vijay Suzuki & Peter Le from UC Berkeley Circle K the Golden Gate Division was able to share MANY days and events together!

Luckily, I have been able to attend the following events and can successfully say that I have finally been able to visit or interclub with almost ALL of the Golden Gate Schools!

Hey CNH:

Summer is here, and I can always tell when summer has arrived because my inbox starts getting more and more full, containing email after email of interested high school seniors who happened to visit our website and are eager to find out more about circle k at their prospective college.

You know, college can be rough on some of us, and lately many of us are starting to get a little homesick, eager to see their families for the summer. But imagine these excited yet scared high school seniors. We have all been there, and we've all had those same jitters.

But we had circle k. And there were people there to help us feel at home.

So this summer, I urge you all to enjoy wherever home is, and remember when you are back on campus there are going to be many freshman who need us to calm their jitters. They will all come with ideas and motivation to make our district better than ever.

It's amazing how one person, just one, has the power to move and motivate a club. And from there a division and finally a district. Always remember that each and every one of you have a say in how we can make our district better. But even more important, you have the chance to bring in our future club chairs, presidents, and even governors this upcoming fall. As UCSD would probably say, let's infect our newest freshmen with that "Circle K Disease".

Continue to serve and fundraise all summer to hit our goal of 80,000 service hours and 35,000 dollars to our three fundraising initiatives. Let's be the difference in young people's lives. Let's change the world for the better, together.

How to pay for the Bling: Financing Your Trip

There are many things you need to prepare before August. Now, you need to begin seeking financial support from your Kiwanis Club and home club. Fees for registration and hotel (4 person occupancy) are around $300 plus your transportation costs. We suggest using the 1/3 plan if your clubs are able to – the Kiwanis Club pays one third, your Circle K pays one third, and the member pays the remainder. Ask nicely and ask soon!

Bling on the Go: Transportation

For those interested in making a road trip out of this, we will try to arrange carpools and will set up fun pit stops along the way. If you plan on flying, book now to save money! Hey CNH!

First off, thank you so much for attending our Spring Training Conferences over the past two weeks! Up north in Davis, we had more than 70 people show up and learn everything from how to make a creative website to proper etiquite, to officer training! Down south in Fullerton, more than 120 Circle K'ers braved officer training, designed cool t-shirts, and learned proper parilamentary procedure! With food and laughs everywhere, I hope that you enjoyed the events as much as I do. A very BIG thank you goes out to Lisa Bao and Gail Nipitnorasate, who chaired these wonderful events. Their hard work was well received by our membership!

But now I need your help! Making an event better can only happen with your feedback. Hi District Board,

The votes have been tallied and I am proud to introduce our 2008-2009 District Fundraising Initiatives (and goals):

Pediatric Trauma Program - $15,000
UNICEF Six Cents Initiative - $10,000
Captain Planet Foundation - $10,000

That’s right! The members of the Cal-Nev-Ha district have voted to fundraise for the Captain Planet Foundation as our third initiative. The objective of the Captain Planet Foundation is to provide grants and funding to “encourage innovative activities that empower children around the world to work individually and collectively as environmental stewards.” Basically, it’s a great way to help both kids AND the environment! One Month!

I can hardly believe it- I got my first round of Monthly Report Forms (MRFs) a few days ago! :)

As a District, here's what we've done (approximately):

We had 29 on time MRFs!
We've volunteered 11,609.3 service hours
We've raised $232.21 for PTP
We've raised $288.19 for UNICEF
We've raised $24.10 for our DFI (TBD)
So total, we've raised $544.50 for all our causes!

Governor Travels -UC Davis Banquet

It was definitely great to travel up to Northern California again, which was great. Seeing people you haven't seen for a while is defnitely a relief, especially when I've traveled so much over this past month.

Arriving at UC Davis's banquet, it immediately gave me memories of last year, when people like Jeff and Madeline were on the District Board the past year, introduced as the new Vice President's of the club.

The more I think about it, the more I see what I think to be "The ideal Circle K Member" in both of them.

I think when you have served on a District Board, and then decide to serve on the club board during your last year, you do it for more than just being involved. I really think they both saw the need to step up and help their club stay as amazing as they have been the past four years. I promise you, I think you have seen the results. Kiwanian of the Year, distinguished awards left and right, UC Davis has definitely embodied everything Circle K these past few years.

But just to see those two, along with Emily, who did an amazing job as President, and Ami, who will always kept on top of her funds (and refund checks, haha), do so many amazing things for UC Davis, I just can't put to words how thankful I'm sure their successors are for the foundation they've laid out for future boards to follow.

I want the whole District to know this wonderful board did more than step up the level of dedicating their time to Circle K International. They set out this past year to make a difference, and they did more than that. They were the difference.

Thanks for making UC Davis such an amazing club this past year, and thanks to anyone else who was a part of their amazing climb to awesomeness.

I am so excited for what Melissa Joe and her board will accomplish. I know that with guidance from your past board, the possibilities for success are endless.

Kiwanis Family Committee Application - Due May 22, 2008

Throughout the year, committee members will work in conjunction with district officers and the Kiwanis Family Chair to establish and to implement various programs, events and resources.

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you all are having an awesome evening! Attached is the 2008 District Service Team Application for the Cal-Nev-Ha District, please take the time to distribute this out to whoever you believe would be amazing asset to the myself and the District Board for this upcoming year.

Assisting the District Board on a District committee is an amazing experience, and many times result in a committee member serving on the board the following year from his or her experiences assisting those on the District Board the year before. This year in an effort to recruit the best of the best from all around the District we will be only opening 6 positions this year. So if you have some innovative ideas, and think you have what it takes to serve alongside other "Titans of Service" on the Service Team read over the application and send it in to me ASAP.

Know also that serving on the District Service Team will take some time and dedication, so make sure you also have the desire to want to work for the District as well (I have FULL confidence in every single one of you!) so that your experience on the committee is an awesomely rewarding one.

This Service Application needs to be emailed only to service@cnhcirclek.org no later than May 15th, 2008 by 10:00pm PST.

With the new Circle K year, comes our first major District Event: Spring Training Conferences (STC). Please give hugs to STC North Chair Gail Nipitnorasate and STC South Chair Lisa Bao for their hard work and effort to provide an amazing event this year. We have provided you with the matrix in advance so that you can become excited about our amazing event. There are some new approaches we are taking to this year’s event, and they all came from your evaluations of past year’s conferences. We hope to get more feedback this year.

Also, International Convention (ICON) is coming as well! August 6-9^th, travel with more than 60 other Cal-Nev-Ha members to Denver, Colorado to celebrate our Mighty District’s accomplishments. We have an entire page dedicated to this amazing event, with information on costs, and our super secret, super awesome District Theme for our ICON. I promise, we’ll let you know what it is on April 28^th.

Finally, get ready to check out our “Community” tab within the next few days. We are truly dedicated as a board to increase communication to our membership and the member experience. The Community tab of this website is actually YOUR tab that contains member recognition, our Publication (Sunburst!), and communication devices such as District Board member blogs and a Youtube® account. We believe these resources will help provide you with an inside look of how we are going to help you love Circle K more than you already do.

I hope you all enjoy the updates so far that our Technology Chair has put together. This is only the beginning of numerous other innovative plans. I hope you all stay tuned for these.

However, I encourage all of you to serve on District committees, and join your club boards to make our district even better.

There is still one appointed position available: Awards Chair. If you are interested in the position, please email me you interest and I will arrange an appointment to speak with you. Also, if you are in the Foothill or Capital Divisions and are interested in serving as Lieutenant Governor, please contact me as well.
